Alyson Annan is hockey’s golden girl. One of the leading players of Australia’s world-beating HockeyRoos, she was named FIH player of the year in 2000 after leading her team to a glorious Olympic gold in Sydney.

Annan is considered the world’s best female hockey player by fans, coaches and players alike. She is now playing club hockey for KleinZwitzerland in Holland. PlanetFieldHockey asked her a few questions.

------------

ANDREW GRIFFITHS (PFH): What do you think makes a good hockey player?
ALYSON ANNAN: A person who is willing to make sacrifices, make a difference and work hard at it! A little bit of natural talent doesn't go astray.

AG: 2000 was an incredible year for you. What did it feel like to win the Olympic Gold on home turf? And then to be named player of the year?
AA: Obviously winning at home was incredible and there are not too many words to describe the feeling... I have played all my hockey in Sydney so to play there and win in front of old coaches and friends and family was a good way to say thanks for their support. Winning player of the year was an honour but not possible without being a member of the Australian women’s hockey team.

AG: Was there a bit of a low after the Olympics, after all the excitement? If so, how did you deal with it?
AA: There wasn’t really a low after the olympics. There were a lot of celebrations and that was good, and when that was over it was time to come to the reality that there is a real world out there. That was the only low.... time to work again!!

AG: What does the next year have in store for you?
AA: Not too sure yet. Am still deciding whether to play on and for how long I might play on. Just a bit of fun, relaxing and some study.

AG: You are now playing in the Dutch League. How do you find the hockey and the culture in Holland?
AA: Hockey in Holland is very good. they have a very organised and professional structure which is important for development. Holland is a small country therefore this is made possible but I find the organisation very professional. The culture here is somewhat 'free of opinion', I like that... Do what you want, when you want and with who you want!!!! Not a bad way to live.

AG: What are your personal goals with hockey from here?
AA: Have fun maybe play another few tournaments, who knows????

AG: How do you think hockey can market itself better?
AA: Get some faces out there to promote it is schools and offer more free tickets to games for spectators. We need to get people to see it before we can make them fans of the sport.

AG: What advice would you give to a young player?
AA: You need to have fun no matter what.. Winning isnt everything, learning is!!!

it would be good to hear more from players who have trained and played overseas regarding anything at any level e.g. recruiting, admin, junior development, junior umpiring, marketing, tactics that they do differently so we can evaluate in depth

Its a shame Alyson doesn't play Soccer, can you imagine how many soccer players would be left if all the players based over seas, had to turn up for the Nationals to be selected in the Australian side, they wouldn't have any players, are the selectors still in the dark ages or what not selecting a lady of this talent, they definately need her, what do you say???????

Surprized I have not noticed this topic before...

There is not a conspiricy, likes or dislikes of Alyson as a player from Aust or coach or anyone else. To be selected to play for Aust, one of the criteria is that you play in a Hockey Aust nationals, in Alysons case our National Hockey League. It was Alysons choice not to leave Holland to participate in this competition, knowing full well the consequences. She chose this option. Her reasons are hers alone. Since she was around 15, all she did was play hockey and strive to be the best. She has achieved her Gold Medals, and perhaps needed a change in her life. Whatever her reasons are we must respect them - as they are hers and hers alone.

There have been interesting debates on other forums about the structure of selection criteria in Aust. One of the reasons our players have to play in a national competition, is to keep the standard of our own nationals as high as possible. If all our Aust players left and played overseas, this standard would drop. Unfortunately our game is not the same as soccer. And in Aust soccer has its own issues with overseas players, just annoucing that ALL players with have to pledge allegience with the national team OVER their club teams to be in contention for selection. Food for thought...

I agree hugely with the comment Alyson made about getting more people out there watching hockey. I am a 17 year old club and county player and just so want there to be more people out there playing. Hockey is my passion and I think the standard of play in Britain and around the world will only improve as more people are given the opportunity to watch the wonderful game and appreciate it. I think that promoting the sport to kids in schools from a young age is the way forward. In my club, we have a junior section of at least 50 U-16 and two active sport groups of at least 30 each (7-13). I think that this is wonderful, but we need to get more people playing the game.
By the way, I thought that this article was great, we need more role models in hockey, and Alyson is one!

Potty... what did Alyson do. She trained, and trained and trained and yes more training. Ever spare moment she was out there practicing. She was noticed by a brilliant individual who recognised her talent and did everything in her power to get Alyson where she wanted to be. Thank you Beth.

Alyson was tough on herself and others, and this toughness pushed her to spent EVERY afternoon training her skills, always trying for the next 'trick' or skill she thought she should have. It was a combination of this dedication, her ambition, and her natural skill that got her to the top.

So next time you are feeling tired, or want to go the the shopping centre/mall with your friends - think of Alyson. And train!
