Zimbabwe: Hockey teams SA-bound By Chris Bvunzawabaya There is a comment on this article

ZIMBABWEAN junior hockey teams today leave for South Africa where they have been invited to take part in a training camp before playing Test matches against the hosts during an 8-day stay in the country.

Under-18, 16A and B boys and girls teams were selected at the inter-provincial tournament in May, according to Val Lapham, who will be managing the teams.

Lapham said the tour is a welcome development from last year when they only managed to send two teams and is a relief to Zimbabwe who last played international matches at the All-Africa Games in Abuja last year.

With the astro turf at Magamba and Kumalo stadia in poor state, the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe is ineligible to host any international matches and the tour will give the locals much-needed exposure ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for Egypt in September.

Meanwhile Lomagundi College clinched the Golden Girls Trophy after outslugging Arundel School 6-5 on penalties last week. Both teams progressed to the finals after beating Harare Convent and Chisipite respectively in the semis.

Convent might have lost the crown to Lomagundi but they gave a good account of themselves, with inspirational captain Rudo Mawema, and Kundai Mawema helping their team win all their pool matches.

The annual festival is held to commemorate the achievements of the Zimbabwe women’s hockey team which scooped a gold medal at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.

Zim Hockey
Congratulations to the Zim Hockey Officials for allowing your junior teams to take part in these tournaments. Having watched several of the Zim schools particiapte in South African school tournaments over the easter weekend, there is no doubt that hockey talent still exists in the country. It would be sad to see it lost and the game diminish. Best of luck to all the teams and Congratulations to Lomagundi for winning the Golden Girls trophy.
