ZIMBABWE’S quest for a return to its former glory gathers momentum at Magamba stadium today when the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe hold trials for the national under-21 men and ladies teams that will take part in the World Cup qualifiers scheduled for Egypt and South Africa in September.
Tight competition is expected at the trials as young players, drawn from Mashonaland, Matabeleland, Midlands and Masvingo battle for places for the continent’s biggest hockey showpiece.
Most players who impressed at the inter-provincial tournament in Bulawayo recently, among them Ryan Engelbrecht, the Prince Edward School duo of Jason Flynn and Walter Banda together with Eradicators’ Tapfumanei Urayai, are tipped to make the final travelling party.
According to HAZ president Custom Kachambwa, only one team will represent the continent at the World Cup and he is confident Zimbabwe has a chance to qualify.
“Africa will have one representative which I’m confident will be Zimbabwe and I believe the selectors will come up with the best team to take the country to the World Cup.’’
The selecting panel of Lizzie Rundle, Pebbles Stodart, Noel Samu Kumbirai Mundangepfupfu, Erasmus Hodza, Allen Jamba and Tongai Mukweva will have the chance to cast their nets wider as most foreign-based University students are on semester breaks.
