The Kenya Hockey Union has announced plans for the play-offs to mark the end of the season.
Nashon Randiek, the KHU secretary said that the play-offs for the newly-introduced national league will be played on July 17 at either Barclays Bank Sports Club or Aryan Club. Park Road meet United States International University-Africa from 2 pm paving way for the match between Mombasa Institute and Nairobi Institute or Nairobi Gymkhana from 4 pm.
The finals of the national league is scheduled for July 18. The following weekend will be devoted to the women's play-offs where champions Telkom play Armed Forces from 2 pm and Blue Eaglets tackle Sliders from 4 pm. Both matches will be at the Barclays Bank Sports Club. The finals will be on July 25 from 3 pm.
Premier league play-offs are to be played on July 31 at the Nairobi Simba Union Club from 2 pm. The first match from 2 pm pits former Africa champions Armed Forces against Wazalendo and from 4 pm, Nairobi Simba meet Kenya Police. The finals are slated for August 1.
In the meantime, the hockey fraternity has come out strongly against the conversion of the 20,000 seater City Park Stadium into an amusement park. Players and club officials urged the new Sports Minister Ochillo Ayacko to act swiftly and return Kenya hockey to past glory.
Outgoing Sports Minister Najib Balala said while handing over to Ayacko that the mess in hockey should be addressed immediately. "The City Park has been turned into a lunar park which is not acceptable. Please use all the necessary machinery to get to the bottom of this matter," said Balala.
The KHU chairman Hardev Singh remains adamant. "The City Park Stadium is owned by the Kenya Hockey Union life members and there is not much anybody can do," he told close confidants.
