Hermes will play in Division B of the European Club Championships in 2005 after losing 3-2 to Russian champions Volga Telecom in Baku today.

It was hearbreaking for the Irish as the Russian winner came in the final minute from a disputed penalty corner. There was no time for Hermes to recover to force the game to a penalty shoot out.

Hermes took the lead in the 15th minute with Jenny Burke getting a deft touch to a Christine Quinlan strike from their first penaly corner of the game.


The Russians equalised two minutes later from play, but Hermes took the lead again from a well-rehearsed penalty corner routine with Dawn Kelly touching in at the far post.

The second half saw Hermes defend resolutely, but all the Russian pressure finally paid off with a goal from play. Then in the 69th minute a bizarre decision by the umpire led to a Russian penalty corner from which they scored the winner.

There was some consolation for Hermes when Aoife McCarthy was awarded the Player of the Tournament.
