The third round of the National League got under way over the weekend with a full programme of three matches which saw the three top sides battle hard to take all three points against the sides in the lower half of the table. Leaders Punch & Judy Rabat edged out The George Pub 1-0 on Saturday, The Hunters Tower Rest had to come from a goal behind to beat Pasta Poiatti 2-1 while Sliema Hs needed a penalty in the final minutes to overcome Celtics YS 3-2. The weekend matches also saw the positive presence of two Italian referees, Pier Luigi Zucca and Sandro Falsetti, who shared the umpiring duties with their Maltese counterparts. Certainly, with four matches to be played, the battle for the final honour is still wide open with reigning Champions enjoying a three point cushion over their rivals.

P W D L F A PTS
Punch & Judy Rabat 11 9 0 2 36 9 27
The Hunters Tower Rest 11 7 3 1 18 8 24
Sliema Hs. 11 7 3 1 19 13 24
The George Pub 11 2 3 6 14 27 9
Pasta Poiatti Qormi 11 1 2 8 6 21 5
Celtics YS 11 1 1 9 12 28 4

On Saturday Punch & Judy Rabat started their game at a good pace causing quite a few problems to The George Pub defence, and when Josef Antonelli put them ahead early on, The George Pub players must have had visions of their earlier defeats against Rabat (5-1, 7-1). However Punch & Judy wasted numerous chances and the large numbers of short corners that they managed to win were mishandled. The George Pub held out till half time with a one goal deficit. In the second half The George Pub, who had Simon Agius and Branko Radojevic back in the squad after long lay offs, became more effective and the game was more balanced. Punch & Judy maintained there superior possession but they could not improve on their score-line as The George Pub second half performance was a much better performance then of late.

On Sunday, Rabat's rivals, needed to win to maintain their pressure on the leaders. They both did but not without a fair amount of complications. In the first game The Hunters Tower Rest went a goal down before half time when Daniel Micallef converted a penalty awarded late in the half. Pasta Poiatti were sharing the exchanges well with their opponents and at times they seemed to have the edge. The Hunter's Tower Rest made a strong reaction in the second half and earlier on in the space of ten minutes they overturned the score thanks to two goals from skipper Charles Micallef. First he converted a penalty stroke and then fired in a strong rising shot after Chircop had saved the first attempt at goal. Pasta Poiatti did not throw in the towel but despite their efforts they could not breach the Young Stars defence again.

With both Punch & Judy Rabat and The Hunters Tower Rest winning it became imperative for Sliema Hs to win their match against Celtics and like their rivals Sliema had to work hard to get the three points. They started strongly and penned the Celtics into their own half. Sliema however were guilty of missing numerous chances and their efforts were only rewarded with one goal through Steve Cachia. Celtics were forced to react and with their first short corner they equalised through Chris Bugeja. Sliema kept on creating chances and they managed to forge back into the lead before half time when Lentini concluded a short corner move. This was the only goal Sliema managed to score from a short corner despite the large number they won. On the other hand Celtics had a 100% scoring ratio. In fact at the start of the second half, from their second and last short corner of the day, Chris Bugeja got his second of the day to make the score 2-2. From then on the game was one way traffic as Sliema worked hard to get the win
ning goal. They remained guilty of missing numerous chances but finally with about five minutes to go the Celtics defence finally conceded, as they were forced to comment a penalty to stop what looked like a certain goal. Michael Caruana Smith stepped up and slotted in past Abdilla to the obvious relief of his team-mates.

The National League now stops for two weeks and resumes on Saturday 17th April with a mouth watering The Hunters Tower Rest vs. Sliema Hs. The next day, on Sunday, Celtics YS face The George Pub while leaders Punch & Judy face a tricky game against Pasta Poiatti Qormi.

celtics vs hotsticks.
For the record:
In my opinion Hotsticks found it hard to score because they do did not create as many chances as usual. Though they had a good share of possession this did not reflect the chances. This can only be said for normal chances because they surely had a good number of short corners.
Also, without arguing and just making a point I also do not agree with the comments of when the third goal was scored.
In my opinion, and this is reflected by numerous people who were watching the match, the goal was not scored 5 mins. before time. It seemed that the umpires let the game play on for 10 minutes above the normal time. On numerous occasions the italian umpire signaled his Maltese colleague that the game was over. This was done way before Hotsticks scored their final goal. This was also reflected by the manager for the opposite side, who thought that the game was over! Whatever! My side did not protest! Well done Celtics you played a good game. Everybody has accidents. Unfotunately quite often to the same individuals.
What,s in a point. We still have no chance to win the league this time. Best of luck for this year.

Congratulations to HAM for the umpire exchange. They proved to be a very good benchmark for us. It also gives us new views on certain issues which always seemed to be border for us.

JUST A WARNING TO EVERYBODY:
Keep your eyes off our stirker! You will have to break the bank to get him.!

CELTICS VS HOTSTICKS.
You are right Bugeja. The game did not end before 10minutes to one. Even Chris Busuttil Lever commented that the game was taking to long to finish off.
The umpires forgot their time. No! N0! Insew idawru is siegha. (they forgot to set the watches to summer time)
Geographically i was told that in italy they do not change to summer time.
Also it could be that the watches were manufactured in Qormi. You know what they say: They only work till noon. The watch must have stopped. Good one! Good Joke!
I cannot understand. You should have issued a protest for the game. What is the agenda?

re. Celtics vs Hotsticks
I agree with Frankie on many points.
First of all I want to congratulate Celtics for the good performances they are providing.
It is true Celtics defended well and Hotsticks odid not manage to create a lot of clear scoring chances despite the numorous amount of short corners won.
I also agree that injury time was quite long. However, I wish to point out that at least 5-7 minutes were played after hotsticks scored the penalty so any accusations implied by Frank are completely unjustified in my opinion.
Finally I want to congratulate Ham personally for the umpire exchange....it was an enriching experience to both umpires and players.

yes i agree with you Michael but another point arises here.... wheter or not Manuel was rigtht or not about the penalty how come that it is the usual team who ridicules the game and disgraces all hockey players with rude and offending words...

It is time something should be done about it or is someone really afraid...
what happened to the protection... even for our umpires.... remember hotsticks - qormi... and the poor referree.?

This is neat. Who is ridiculing the game? 14 days prior to the match in question, we played a hockey game against white hart. It was a Hockey game that we have become accustomed to for a long time now. Everybody knew the rules and so we played and enjoyed ourselves. But on the day in question in the game against Young Stars, we played a different type of Hockey. The course of the game was immediately set when Hughes was blatantly sent off by the Italian umpire for just saying "feet" and on seeing this, the Maltese umpire decided he wanted to impress his foreign colleague by raising his strictness level to the maximum and adhering to every decision that the Italian umpire took regardless of how close he was to the action.

Rumour also has it that during this match my team was used as a guinea pig. Some of us beleive that for the first time in Maltese Sport History, video evidence has been used on the pitch to take an umpiring decision. Ivan was already in position to give the short corner when the Italian umpire decided to put his nose in it and he was at spitting distance to his other colleague filming the match. Who knows what went on there?

Now let's talk about the more series incident. How in the world can you say "whether or not Manuel was right or not about the penalty"? I know exactly what happened because I was there and it concerned me. There was no way that the Italian umpire could see if I swayed my hand at the ball because he was far away and facing me, yet he changed the maltese umpire's decision and the latter accepted it again even though being just 6 feet away. If we need foreign umpires to tell us that this was not a penalty stroke, we are really in a torrid state. Who is ridiculing the game?

Ramon does his best to defend his club's position. Unfortunatly actions speak louder then words and not withstanding the presence of the foreign umpires the end result was the same as we have now got so used to over the years at regular, sicking intervals. Having O'Conner umpiring would probably produce the same result The problem is more then evident and should be dealt with once and for all!!!!!!!!

First of all I wish to congratulate Celtics for a very good game against Hotstics. Secondly, I must also congratulate 'Iz-Zghir' for both his goals but especially the first one. It was simply BOMBAstick!

As regards the extra time, I have to point out that there was actually 11 minutes extra and Hotsticks's 3rd goal came on the 9th minute of extra time. Therefore, dear Mr Caruana Smith, there were no 5-7 minutes played after the third goal. However, I will allow you this mistake since you obviously did not have a watch whilst playing and I also understand that 2 minutes must have seemed to take a lifetime to go by in that situation.

Ridiculing the Game
First of all be men enough and sign your comments with your own names. The italian umpire knew that the great M Imbroll made an utter mess of almost every decision during the game that he justified our actions. The italian umpire told me that he was a player himself and he understood the reason for our outbursts. Yet do our umpires need to suck up to these foreign umpires and be just mere pupils instead of umpiring on the same par. Why were A Ghio, R Cremona and the other italian on the pitch while the game was being played. Do we need 5 umpires for a match, 3 of which influencing the others. There is ample space in the stands. Whenever any of you need to pass judgement on my team do so in my presence. I will be in the pitch wearing the no 11 shirt.

Celtics vs Hotsticks
Thank you james for your comments regarding my goals...

I guess all celtics felt a bit down after such an unlucky ride... and it hasn't been the first one this season. Twice have young stars scored in the last few minutes of the game and this time was the turn for Hotsticks.. I have come to accept these kind of umpiring blunders, and i guess every team has tasted one of them now and again. Well statistics show that celtics have been beaten quite a couple of times in the last few minutes and this maybe reflects a bit of lack of experiences. What is sure is that Celtics have a future ahead of them. Their players are mostly under sixteen players or players who have just toppled over the under sixteen age bracket.

Well done Celtics

I would like to find you at the next game! But I guess you will not be on the pitch! Since you are suspended (is this something new?)In the next game you have 3 players which will not be playing due to suspensions and your team should feel lucky! There should have been also your keeper and yourslef suspended for 2/3 matches with a red card!

So please RUEBEN CHIRCOP shut up! If you were in a series club you would never even be a Captian. Is this the way you lead your team mates!

Re Celtics vs Hotsticks
I have to confirm that the game took 10 minutes more then the normal timing and when the penalty was given the time was already over. I feel that we gave a good game to several teams this year but surely the lack of experience in the majority of the players is one of the main reason of our actual position.
Well our team was not built to win the competition this year but to give match practice to these kids.
As it was named before yes we could launch a protest for the game to be replayed but I do not believe it would have been right. Games should be won on the pitch and on the day that is what Hotsticks done. It could have been us that made a counter attack and scored instead of Hotsticks.
Our aim is to give a hard time to every team in the league this season and till now we done it almost in all the games.

Celtics
Many are the comments that are appearing above … from people I know and from others that seem to disassociate themselves from even what they say! The subject that always gets attention is Umpires … & Umpires. I won’t say much about this subject except that the exchange with the Italian Federation was in my opinion a benefit to our game and for those who always complain, the two things that have to be done are; having more Umpires so that someday we will be spoilt for choice (!) and only the best will get the chance of umpiring National League games (I’m dreaming I know … but?!) and secondly our clubs and teams stop destroying new Umpires who have the courage (cos you have to have some) to take up the whistle.

However what I wanted to comment about was the Celtics team. Looking back on the season I think that the team did well for the first season in full competition when one considers that most of the players are inexperienced and luck wasn’t exactly on their side in many instances. The team has more experienced players as well, such as Andre (who ran a lot this year!) and Chris. Another positive aspect from what I observed in performances from Celtics is the fact that they scored goals even if they conceded a larger number, and this is positive! This means that Celtics were not playing just for obtaining respectable results, but were out on the field to play to their best, whilst its good to note that most of the goals were scored from Short-corners by Chris (if I have the right impression). What in my humble opinion Celtics should watch are a couple of things that I would list hereunder:

1) Overconfidence. Being negative won’t help any situation, however being overconfident and having people shouting positive remarks when the team’s performance is actually terrible, won’t help in the long term either. You have to call a spade, a spade! And when players are not performing well they should be told what was wrong with their action/s, even after the game in a constructive manner.

2) Players have to have space for their own development within the team and they have to feel that they have the possibility to do so. I would even risk that some players are seen as ambitious. Players, especially the young ones, have to be given space and guidance to improve their individual skills. How they will eventually use them to the benefit of all the team is a psychological battle for their coach/mentor that has to be able to “convince” the player to use his skill for the benefit of his colleagues and team. It’s not an easy job, but not impossible. Games between same level sides are won by that “extra” that a skill-full player may give you at decisive moments. You may have all the players within a team that genuinely swear to play for the team, but if one doesn’t have good players, the teamwork would be just useless.

3) My last point is that there are too many static players within the team. You cannot have 4 players anchored at the back, a goalie, another 2 in front, and just 4 doing the running. The team must move together as compact as possible, and it should be the aim of the team to shorten the distance (on the field) between the last man and the centre forward. With so many young players, physical fitness should be the least of problems.

Finally I think that the introduction of another team in our league was a positive thing and wish Celtics the best of luck for the future.

Qormi HC
It seems that quite a few of you wake up when there is some sort of controversy otherwise it is sleeping time.

Having read the above comments I find a few which are disturbing and these concern the Qormi side and their Captain.

I was not present for this game but I can imagine from past experience what went on. Having said that I feel that the Qormi side has always been too full of enthusiasm(nothing wrong with that) and this is what makes them the "monster" we know them as. Unfortunately at times they are rubbed the wrong way and in most instances it is a question of " Give a dog a bad name and hang him".
There is much more to say but I better stop at that.

Cheers

Cheers Celtics
I must congratulate Celts for their brave outings. They are not an easy team to beat and we knew this before the game. On most points Celts are right, however the penalty was in legitimite time and we should have had a penalty in normal time, like when a short corner is intentionally blocked with feet! However, us being an experienced team should not depend on penalties at the final moment to win a game against lesser opposition.
I here feel like airing an opinion which may create some waves. I feel that some thought should be put into the possibilities of Robert Aquilina being considered as National Team Coach once (and only once) Tony Tabone decides to call it a day. I believe that Rob has all the requisites however he needs to feel ready and willing for the post.

Actually it does not even matter at what time the stroke was since it was before the umpire whistled the end. Hotsticks kept on fighting till the end and they took the 3 points. The stroke was a foul which was rightly given, but I do not remember any other moment that should have been given a stroke.
Thanks to Robert for your suggestions.

CELTICS VS WHITEHART.
SURELY ONE OF OUR WORST PERFORMANCES. HOPE TO DO BETTER IN OUR NEXT GAMES. WHITEHART JUST WERE SO CLINICALLY GOOD WITH THEIR CHANCES. THIS IS SOMETHING ON WHICH WE MISSED OUT ON SUNDAY. UNFORTUNATELY WE PLAYED THE FIRST HALF WITH 10 PLAYERS.
MERIT ALSO GOES TO ANDREW, THE KEEPER. WITHOUT DOUBT, HE HAD A VERY GOOD GAME.

THE POSITIVE SIDE OF THE COIN WAS THAT I SAW A COUPLE OF MOVEMENTS FROM SOME OF THE YOUNGER PLAYERS WHICH SHOW VERY SOUND IMPROVEMENTS.#

i just hope that their feelings are reciprocal. you are such a good guy.
Come on. Do not let your feelings run away.

As for your scoring do not worry. Tomorrow during the training session i will show you how it should be done.
I am sure i would have scored four goals easily last Sunday. Well i just need to get fit. I will soon be! Maybe next year.!!!!!!
