MALAYSIA are in the process of getting the green light from the Sports Ministry to bid for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers' host job next year.

"It's kind of funny as there no bidders yet for the World Cup qualifier next year. The dates have yet to be decided too. So why not we make a bid to host it?" said MHF secretary S. Satgunam yesterday.

He, however, added MHF must get the greenlight from the Sports Ministry first. "We will write to the ministry about our intentions in the hope of getting their clearance." Satgunam said Malaysia stood a good chance of hosting the qualifier as they have good records and facilities.

"The Final in 2006 is also being held in Germany. Under normal practice, the qualifier will be held in other continents." Malaysia, for the record, hosted the 2002 Final at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil where they finished eighth.

The Malaysians, after their failure to qualify for the Athens Olympics in August, will have nothing to look forward to this year.

Satgunam, however, said MHF will draw the training programmes in preparation for the World Cup qualifier after a coach has been appointed.

The national team are now without a coach following German Paul Lissek's removal after the failure in the Olympic qualifier in Madrid recently, where Malaysia finished 10th.

Lissek is now involved in the development aspect and also acts as a consultant.

The national team, under "caretaker" coach Yahya Atan, started training yesterday in preparation for two Four-Nation tournaments in Australia in the middle of next month.

These two tournaments are going to be the last assignments for the national team this year.

No takers?
No other countries would want to bid for the tournament? No doubt with Malaysia's capability as host, but the signs are not good for world hockey if the hosting job remains in the same pool of countries.

Come on FIH, some more effort to make the sport more global!

Hosting fee
The problem's not that noone WANTS to host the tournament, the problem is the steep fee you have to pay for being allowed to host it. Apparently the sum asked for by the FIH is so large that so far noone has been willing to submit to these conditions...

This is quite ridiculous, and I think Malaysia shouldn't bid but wait for the FIH to lower the fee to a reasonable amount. Which they will obviously would have done some time soon, they can't possibly NOT hold a qualifier!!

Malaysia must in a dream world - the tournament will be held in China per the official FIH web site. Seems like there were bids for the event and people can host it if they are on top of their game. Malaysia administrators need to get with it!

Jee, they are really having a great 6 months- First fire the coach and then not fire the coach, then disband the team and then not disband the team, then decide to make a bid for a tournament thats allready been awarded. Fools!! No wonder they cant run hockey in malaysia.

fools!!
The MHF are a bunch of clowns who d not know what's happening in the hockey world.

Today (april 1), there was an item in the fStar quoting the pathetic secretary Satgunam as saying they are awaiting the Government nod to host the qualifier. This monkey did not even know that the FIH had already awarded it to China on March 27.

These people are only doing things for thesmselves as think they are the best organisers in the world.

Thank God, it is not being held in Kuala Lumpur. For, hockey would lose it all if Malaysia had failed to make it for World Cup 2006.
