The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) has accepted an appeal by the Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) women's team to compete in the national league, chairman Hardev Singh said yesterday. Singh said the coastal team has met all conditions set by the national office for them to be allowed to participate in the league.
"MSC has assured the union that they will honour all their matches, both at home and away. This was among the conditions set for them," Singh said. MSC, who are making their maiden appearance could not enter the league when it started in November, last year, due to lack of funds. Sports Minister Najib Balala rescued the team when he recently donated Sh200,000 towards their participation in the league. The minister presented the donation at a function in Mombasa on March 2. Hardev said they are making efforts to have more women's teams in the league.
The admission of MSC brings the number of women's teams in the league to seven. Others are national champions, Telkom Kenya, Armed Forces, Blue Eaglets, Sliders, Vikings and Impala Sports Club.
Meanwhile, Kenya will take part in a six-nations tournament set for March 20-29 in Cairo, Egypt. The KHU executive committee was due to meet yesterday evening to pick a national team for the event.
Besides Kenya and the hosts other teams will come from Europe and Asia.

PLEASE HELP HOCKEY
Thank you very much for letting MSC back in the league we need numbers in the ladies league please also do the same with Kisumu and Kitale.
Secondly I would like to request the person in charge of selecting the team to Egypt to be very careful and choose the right players and please do get the team another coach apart from Michael Omondi as he has failed Kenya 3times as a National Team coach. He picks players according to favours which they do for him like in Abuja some ladies gave him part of their allowances to get in be in the team and he dropped very good players and that is why the ladies performed poorly even though we really expected them to come back with at least a silver medal. The minister, KNSC or someone needs to help hockey players as we are really suffering and we have very good players outside here. I think we have very many good coaches in clubs and i do think they can do better given a chance. Let us not repeat what happened in the last Åkbar tournament in Egypt when we had the same coach and same same mistakes as usual.
Please get us players a neutral coach who does not seek favours or has personal problems with players.
I do appeal to the Sports Minister and his office to come to our aid as hockey is now dying and us players love hockey.

Hi Player,
As much as the little that we can see is happening, to a greater extent I heap the blame on hockey players current and past for not standing up for the game and hence its deteriration at the hands of the few who have no regards at all for the development of the sport but have instead exposed themselves to manipulation and hence being compromised on their integrity to run the sport. Be informed that a team was already named for the Egypt event. Now you may ask, what was the criteria of naming this team, where were the players drawn from (premier league, national league, Nairobi or Nationwide), who is the coach etc. Believe it or not everything is in place and mark my words, none of these things were done procedurally. It is like I know you as a friend and I call you that we go and play in Egypt. This is how hockey is run in Kenya. I would urge you, if you really care about hockey, to stop whining and looking upto somebody else to change hockey and participate yorself in doing so. It is only the hockeyplayers themselves who know how much it pains them to be in the doldrums of hockey. So get your likes and stand up for hockey.

Moses
Moses, that's a good point. No players no hockey. KHU ought to realize this and weigh the consequences they might have to face if all players were to say "enough is enough". Hockey players in Kenya have really been mistreated if not abused to the point where they are left dump with no words to express themselves. Some former players (drafted) are now adapting to the likes of KHU forcing them to turned against the current players and treat them like useless objects. Talents are being wasted just because no one can stand up and say something. Players themselves do not understand how badly they have been mistreated. I also tend to blame the government for not supporting this sport which has brought Kenya fame and more medals as opposed to other sports. KHU need to wake up and stop pinning down teams which are struggling to be on the league. I am always willing to donate something to new hockey clubs and I have a couple of friends who have the same urge. Until KHU straighten things up, we?ll just be willing to?.. That?s all folks.

KENYA Hockey
Hmm!! Reading through you your comments one notices embarrassment, fear, resignation and absolute apathy about the kenyan sport. eg Joniko, ur willing to contribute to the devlopment of new hockey clubs.... you have not done so....yet- how true are you? I doubt you are.
Moses and player seemm to be the really frustrated ones here. However, from experience in the players circuit i think you guys have valid arguments... But can u please propose some concrete actions that we could take? The kenyan team has been reduced to the "have beens" everybody from Hardev singh to the coaches and umpires. They have an apparent lack of creativity and ingenuity. The way forward?! Please propse and enact some strong and workable solutions for kenyan hockey. As of now it is more of social hockey at Barclays!
Over and out.
