Feb 21,'04, New York: Action packed weekend is expected when 10 Men and 10 Women teams start competition this morning at the 2004 Big Apple Indoor International in New York. Teams from Europe, Canada and USA will compete at the indoor facility of Riverbank State Park in Manhattan over the next two days with today being the busiest, providing 13.5 hours of nonstop hockey. "We are once again looking forward to exciting top class nonstop hockey and great fun for all," said Nigel Traverso, the Tournament Chairman.
The men's defending champions GOA Reds will face stiff challenge from the Bohemian Praha of the Czech Republic and Team USA. GOA is missing two of their stars, the potent drag-flicker and last year's tournament MVP, Wayne Fernandes, and the always exciting Ken Periera. A final between Bohemian Praha and Team USA should not be a surprise.
In the women's division, 2003 champions Minutewomen will face strong competition from Lady Mavericks and Team USA. This tournament is the final tune-up for both women and men USA teams before the 2nd Indoor Pan American Cup that will be held in Valencia, Venezuela from March 19-21.

What a Player
Didi you guys see how Jeewanjot performed. He was grea, he was definately the al-star and back-bone of his team. This is just another reason why jeewanjot should be on the National Team, and if his brother was there....There team would have won for sure, maybe they should all come down next year with the Lions, It would be interesting to see how the Canadian Indoor Invitational Champs would manage.
~Good Tournament overall....gets better evey year~

Congratualtions to the USA womens team!
They looked very good and were great to watch against the always tough minutewomen who had some great players.
I think the uS women have made huge strides since the last indoor pan ams while the men have gone way down....

I assume Jeewanjot is a Titan player - number 10 would have to be my guess based on what I saw of the games. Great moves J.
Unfortunately it seemed that all the men's teams in this tournament were easily missing 2 to 4 key players which would have made the competition even greater. Not many subs on most teams either which makes a difference towards the end. It's unfortunate that some of the Czech players did not manage to get to NY which would have equally permitted them to be even more competitive.
More attention will be required in setting up the NAPL dates next year in order to not interfere again with the quality of the Big Apple tournament.
Good organization as usual.

Simba
What if Simba from Calgary entered this tournament? I heard they played exceptionally well again this year coming in second place. Last year, they placed 1st. What are the thoughts on Simba playing in NY.

What bearing does the NAPL have on this tournament? The NAPL is a winter league played in Dec, Jan, Feb, March to avoid conflicting with outdoor leagues and schools. Surely you're expecting NAPL to let tournaments take precendence over the league?

Reply to NAPL
I don't expect anyone to consider that NAPL has more importance than a tournament and I don't expect anyone to consider that a tournament has more importance thant the NAPL. Everyone can determine for themselves which one has, could have, should have, may have or must have priority.
However, in this small world of opportunity to play the indoor game in which you may have 2 or 3 decent tournaments and 4 league weekends, you obviously want to plan all dates efficiently in order to maximize the presence of players at given weekends; everyone works, has kids, has obligations...etc
As such, my comment was that the NAPL should simply be more prepared in its 2004-2005 planning in order to avoid a weekend date arising so close to the Fixture that is the Big apple in the 3rd week of Feb.
You seem to say that you expect the NAPL to let tournaments take precedence over the league. I am not clear on how your comment is different from mine and why you actually have a question.

What a bunch garbage...get your heads out of the sand box. Where are the results fot the Big Apple Tournament....if you go to the site it has results of the 2002 event. Get current with your own event before you start to shoot down another event. Make sure your house is in order before you complain about othere tournaments.

reply to NAPL and General
Just to let both of you know, every single players in the final games with the exception of two women and one man, are members of NAPL teams! The NAPL does not play till this weekend at Statten Island and will not play again till the weekend of March 14-15th. Therefore there were no conflicts with the Big Apple Tournament! The people in charge of NAPL apparently recognized the Big Apple Tournment as one of importance and scheduled as such.

Lions
Mr. Bath...Jewanjot Bath that is, is a lions player...He was guest staring with the Titans. and yes he was amazing.
Simba is a great team, they did play well at the indoors invitational, I think that The Lions and Simba should enter next year, they were in the finals at the indoors where Lions did win.

Congratulations BAFH
A well run tournament. The games went off like clockwork, the action was exciting and the atmosphere one of kindred spirit and cooperation. It was amateur (in the sense of unpaid, not in the quality of the play) sport at its very best. Kudos to the organizers and I wish them the very best of success in their next go round. While it would be nice for all of us who live in the electronic world of instant access to go to the BAFH website to see and read about the results, those who criticize might volunteer with that effort in the same way as the many who volunteered this weekend to make the tournament a success. Congrats BAFH, you have this fan's admiration.

Reply to General, NAPL and SB13
First - Thank you to BAFH and Nigel for a great tournament. I'm certain results will be posted eventually.
1st men's semi: Pool winner Mtl led 2-0 at halftime and lost 3-2 in second OT in crossover to Charleston
2nd men's semi: Pool winner Tor Titans led 4-1 late and lost 5-4 on strokes in crossover to Boston
Not sure of development of final game other than victory by Charleston
I do not want to stray too far away from Big apple, but I must still comment to writers above as follows: As a player and organizer I must disagree with SB13 - although I recognize the difficulties in securing a facility and applaud the work done by NAPL in getting Staten Island this upcoming weekend, it is not easy to get your best squad out for every weekend when they are set so close to eachother. I would have been able to get a strong 8 to 9 players out to Big Apple on 21-22 or a strong 8 to 10 players to NAPL on 28-29, but I cannot achieve both in consecutive weeks. I managed 6 guys for Big Apple and am sitting on the fence with 6 as we speak for NAPL. This is because these weekends are consecutive. So I'm not sure if I agree with General or NAPL but I have sincere hesitations in agreeing with SB13 comments. All these weekends are my priority...not one is more important than the other.
BAFH - great fun, great games. Both men semi finals went down to the wire as did the men's final. Close matches. USA women team looked great in certain matches that I saw. Best of luck to them. USA men's will certainly get their team in gear and completed in time for their tournament so good luck to them also.
Thanks to all involved in the organization, volunteers and all the teams and umpires.

It seem that there is quiet the rivalry develpoing between the Boston Miracles and Montreal. I am wondering it is stemed form the incodent in Boston but it is sure to me a real slug fest on Statten Island.
Bring your shin pads!!!!!! LOL LOL
On the serious side it is good to see some rivalries starting. But i must say if the umpiring is not good for the game it can turn into a complete mess.
Please NAPL umpires schedule your best for the Boston Vs Montreal game.

Usa women 5-0 over GOA
The USA women by far the best womens team and the two us reserves on boston played very well for the minutewomen.
I know this was the first REAL games the the USA women have had and looked very good....quick, great passing and some very good corners especially the one in the final.
Good Luck to them at the indoor pan-ams and I hope the men get it together. The women looked very professional all the time where the men looked liked a bunch of misfits some of them walking around with their shirts off.
Congrats once again to the women and their coaching staff!

BAHF (Big Apple Hockey)
I appreciate reading all the comments and would like to point out one small thing. Our organization is BAHF, Inc., or Big APple Hockey not BAFH as was mentioned a few times.
We are having a small problem with our website and is working to solve it so as to publish the results of the tournament ASAP.
Thanks for your patience, support and understanding!

Clarification
It was a typo, I meant you can't expect NAPL to bend over backwards around other tournaments. For example say there was a longer gap between BAF and NAPL Staten Island weekend in Feb, then another group of people will be arguing that this conflicts with the Candian Indoor holidays tournament that was help on Feb 7th weekend. Granted that not as many people from the NAPL go there, but my point is that NAPL should be a winter Dec, Jan, Feb, March league (this is when most players are available) and has to go for dates that are available. Yes they should take other great tournaments like BAF into considerations but the NAPL has to take precedence as a winter league. Having too much indoor hockey is a good problem.!!

How about the retired boys
Men's division:
GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How about those guys. Not that they are really that old. What a fun group of guys, I was so glad to see them take 1st place. They seem to be playing hockey for all the right reasons. They like each other, which is rare on most hockey teams!
I also liked the Slap Shot Movie characters! What a great idea. Keep playing guys, you make others realize why they started playing in the first place.
