New Record in Hong Kong Mini Hockey Tournament

(Hong Kong, 15th Feb. 2004) Over 260 Mini Hockey players age from 8-12 attended the Hong Kong Mini Hockey Tournament which held at Lok Fu Multi Purpose Ground today. Teams from Discovery Bay International School, Hong Kong Football Club, American International School, Kowloon Cricket Club, Valley Hockey, German Swiss International School and Kai Tak Mini Hockey Club. They were divided into age group of Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12.

?We are pleased to see the number of participant increasing but on the other hand we worry that once when their age reaches 12, they will not allow playing in the mini hockey. So we are now seeking for new blood to join our center.? said Alex Lai, Chairman of Kai Tai Mini Hockey Club.

Around 300 parents also attended this meaningful event and with their assistant, the ?Ground? was decorated like a carnival. Refreshment, lucky draw, souvenirs counter and some help in umpiring most of the games.
It?s good to see parents and their children spending a good Sunday morning together for the same purpose ? ?Hockey & Fun?.

I can remember days of 3 mini circuits in HK, with over 200 at each. Sad to see the sport is dying.

Mini Hockey
Way to focus on the negatives Fok! Keep living in the past and then you won't have to do anything about the 'dwindling' numbers. You seem to have missed the point however, that numbers at this tournament are on the INCREASE! Good work to the clubs who are actively promoting mini hockey and getting kids along...keep it up! What we need to address now is how do we keep the kids in the sport for longer, as there is a real gap at U15 and U18 levels as Alex laments in the article. Let's promote the sport and think positive - who is going to want to come and play a sport if you tell them that it is dying? Get real...

Mini
It is very good that we finally start promoting mini's again, but when I was a little kid it was huge, mini-hockey, and now we simply try to celebrate our under achievement in the past 5 years.

Mini Hockey in HK has been a breading ground for several International Players, particularly in the UK. It is great to see the sport is still thriving, and children are still being nurtured through this fantastic organisation. Could someone tell me how I can contact the "committee" at Kai Tak HC, as they helped me to go a long way in sport. Keep up the good work.

Mini Hockey
There were number of kids who now already over the age to play mini hockey. We also need to admit that the dropping rate was quite high in hocekey but this is not only hockey but to many other sports as well. If we get more parents involve and they understand that hockey is a safe sports and any ages can play, then hockey can be one of the PE sports lesson. Good work to those who help running the mini hockey and do keep it up.

good to see realistic comments and admitting there is work to do to get back to the old days. Both Valley and HKFC are less than half the players in mini they had 5 years ago...Again, we need to promote our sport

How would one go about securing a position on a club in Hong Kong?
I am interested in studying there and want to find out some information on the hockey in Hong Kong. Do any of the clubs have websites?

Yes
I agree with Fok3 that we need to go back old days in promoting mini hockey or youth hockey. But I would suggest that most imortant is to develope mini hockey in local junior schools as this could help more local students to have chance to play hockey. As not many residents knows how to enter mini hockey club in Hong Kong due to less media cover in the sport.

Our club goes into about 4-5 schools in Hong Kong weekly and runs hockey. We are also available to come in to run a demonstration at a school if they are thinking of adding hockey to their PE curriculum. Unfortunately there are many schools - only so many coaches and limited days in the week! But we are trying...

For sure there is interest in schools for hockey from 5-16 yrs old. HKHA is working at getting to as many schools as possible as are Valley & I am sure FC.

As Matt put it there are 3 points here, Funding, Facilities & not enough coaches to go around. If you(r) school would like coaching contact www.valleyhockey.com or Tony Chueng. Both would be glad to help out.

With the top contender of Lee Kum Kee, they should both make an effort. Guv for fitness coach and Michelle for how not to play defense. This will be a good investment for the future and they both come highly recommended by no one other than Fraser. Who has been one of the top Icons in HK hockey as shown in Singapore where he was the HKU21 mascot. We need more players like these in HK hopefully they will be able to make this HK dream come true.
