SCOTLAND women’s hockey team play Italy, the hosts, and Portugal on the first day of the European Indoor Nations Trophy, starting today in Padova, writes Mike Stanger.

The Italian match is a tough opener for the Scots, led by captain Ali Denholm, as her squad seek an immediate return to the A division for the biennial tournament which, next time, is a qualifying event for the 2007 World Cup.

Making her international indoor debut at the age of 44 is Bonagrass Grove defender and double Olympian Alison Ramsay. She won bronze in the outdoor game in Barcelona in 1992, but has never represented her country indoors.

Scotland play Slovakia, Ukraine, Poland and Switzerland tomorrow and on Sunday.
