The Hunters Tower Rest YS move to the top of the hockey National League when they brushed aside the challenge of reigning Champions Punch & Judy Rabat with a clear 2-0 victory. In Sunday's second game Sliema Hs kept on the heels of the two front runners when they beat Pasta Poiatti 1-0 thanks to a first half penalty goal.

The Hunters Tower Rest YS 2 vs. Punch & Judy Rabat 0
H.T. 2-0
Umpires: Anthony Tabone and Reno Cremona

Punch & Judy Rabat came into this game on the back of three impressive and high-scoring games in which they had scored fifteen goals and conceded just two. The Hunters Tower Rest were also unbeaten but had dropped two points against Sliema Hs. They were, however, coming from a convincing victory against The George Pub. For this game they were at full strength, with skipper Charles Micallef back in the starting eleven following his recovery from the injury that had left him out of The George Pub match. Punch & Judy were without defensive lynch-pin Falzon and were forced to leave the half-fit midfield schemer Kevin Micallef on the bench.

Young Stars quickly got their rhythm going and the constant running of their forwards was giving problems to the rather static and at times disorganised Rabat defence. Punch & Judy could not get their usually flowing attacking game going as The Hunters Tower Rest kept an almost constant pressure. Despite all this, however, Young Stars only took a one goal into the half-time break courtesy of a penalty goal scored by Charles Micallef. The penalty was awarded following an infringement by Chris Bugeja.

Punch & Judy brought in Kevin Micallef for the second half but it was obvious that he was not at his best and his contribution was minimal. The Hunters Tower Rest remained the better sided and deservedly scored their second goal through Edward Hughes. Rabat tried to get something out of the game but on the day they were forced to play second fiddle to a better side and Young Stars deservedly took the three points that took to the top of the standings.

Sliema Hs 1 vs. Pasta Poiatti Qormi 0
H.T. 1-0
Umpires: Andre Ghigo and Joe Lewis

Together with The Hunters Tower Rest, Sliema Hs remain the only unbeaten side and with Sunday's victory they moved up to third place, three points less then the leaders but with a game in hand. On Sunday they were without Keith Vella and kept the injured Caruana Smith on the bench. Pasta Poiatti, who lost the services of the two foreigners that were so effective during the Challenge Cup, presented their usual formation based around Reuben Chircop in defence, Bianchi in midfield and Magri in attack. The game had moments of good hockey and others of useless bickering between the players that interrupted the rhythm of the game. Over all Sliema Hs deserved their victory especially on their first half performance.

The early stages saw Sliema's attackers miss a couple of chances but midway through the half they got the all important goal, when following a period of sustain pressure they were awarded a penalty that Liam Pace neatly put away with a flick to the top corner. Pasta Poiatti tried to make a reaction but with Magri ably muzzled by Keith Scicluna and the Sliema Hs defence in general, Qormi's attack had few options and Mallia was rarely tested. At the other end Chircop in the Qormi goal made a couple of good saves to keep his team in the game right till the end.

Following these matches the league table is as follows:

P W D L F A PTS
The Hunters Tower Rest 4 3 1 0 8 2 10
Punch & Judy Rabat 4 3 0 1 15 4 9
Sliema Hs. 3 2 1 0 4 1 7
The George Pub 3 1 0 2 5 9 3
Celtics YS 3 0 0 3 2 10 0
Pasta Poiatti Qormi 3 0 0 3 0 8 0

Top Scorer: Josef Antonelli (Punch & Judy) - 7 goals.

The League continues on Sunday with the two top teams having a rest day. In the first match the two bottom sides, Celtics YS and Pasta Poiatti, will be all out to get their points tally going. Pasta Poiatti will also be looking for their first goal. In the second match Sliema will be looking towards maintaining their positive start to the season when they face The George Pub. The latter have been decimated by injuries this year and the lack of experience of their younger players sometimes comes to the fore but their skipper David Agius and forward Luke Busutill Leaver (an ex-Sliema Hs player) can provide a formidable threat. The Sliema defence is forewarned.

Qormi vs Celtics should be a good game! Both need points to not stay at the bottom. In my opinion in this game the experience will take the points.Sliema should take all points from the encounter vs Pembroke as they are much superior, but Pembroke will be putting their hopes in Busuttil Leaver counter attack goals, which gave them their only points against Celtics.
On saturday there is the Under 16 very important game Young Stars vs San Anton, the best 2 nurseries on the island at the moment. Young Stars need to win the game to keep in touch with San Anton.

Sliema Ruined a good Chance
Sliema drew with White Hart and Floriana YS are 1st in the league by their own!.
Next week they can go for an even larger advantage since Rabat and Sliema will meet on sunday and both teams need to win to keep in touch with Floriana.
Floriana will play Celtics (which this weekend won their first 3 points and if they keep on improving this way they will do some surprises) and should take all points from the encounter, although Celtics will try to get something from this game too.
Under 16 is almost decided since San Anton beat Young Stars 3-2 and now are 5 points above with 3 games to go.

Although it was a hard derby game we were superior and we played against 10 players in the Dee. we should have won 10-0 if it was not for their keeper. Prosit Yellows we are the best team at the club. Allavolja pruvaw ma rnexxielhomx izommuna!

Jonathan, I don't think you can even handle the truth let alone say the truth. So good riddance to bad rubish and return only when you are mature enough to use your name.

We did very well on this site without 'foxes' and all other sort of animals and nom-de-plume!

the whole truth
Jhonni Boy, (cause this is what I'll have to call you since you will not reveal your true identity)

Although "the whole truth" may sometimes be hard to understand or appreciate since it is more often that not very much subjective from each individual's point of view, you and any other person out there who still cannot understand our Club's position vis-a-vis our two teams must understand that YSHC is feilding two teams in the competitions organised by the HAM with the understanding that both teams will be able to freely compete with other teams and obviously also between each other.

Now, it is understood that the Floriana YS should be the better team since the FYS coach was given the right of first refusal when selecting his squad (with the exception of a couple of players), whilst the Celtics YS is the team made up of all the most promising players available from our Club plus a number of experienced players to help motivate and enhance these players' potential.

Should these young players actually make the desired improvement, next season they too will have the opportunity to be chosen to play for the FYS.

When it comes to a 'derby match' like the one of last Saturday, yet again our Club gives the freehand to both teams to compete seperatly and does not expect any of the teams to budge off the competition just to make it easy for the other team. If anything, it is a fact that in the event of a derby, every player will always put in that extra effort. This is always axpected since it is human nature to try to be better that your older brother. Just like between two brothers who fight over who gets the nicest apple and after one does get it, the other will argue that his is better tasting!

With this in mind, I must admit that I found it very offensive when you remarked that the FYS are the best team in our club since I beleive that you are not even a member of our Club and thus such comment must have only been intended to create a rift between our two teams.

I hope that this has cleared up your otherwise gloomy view of our Club and would appreciate if you would refrain from addressing our Club or any of our teams in the future without exposing your true identity.

Regards,

James

Dear Johnnie,

I'm really disgusted with your comments because they are far from constructive. I'm sorry to point out the fact that if you want to win arguments you cannot do so by pointing out a person's personal problems.

Another thing is that you are misinformed about training sessions since FYS are having a minimum number of 10 persons per training session on a regular basis and they hold two training sessions per week. There are cases where you have an attendance of 14 and 15 players in a session but its not always possible because everyone has his own priorities. At first sessions were a bit doggie but now all sessions are being organised in a well planned manner, this is proven by the position of FYS in the league table!!! Moreover, in some cases sessions end without even making a practice match between players present.

Press Reports
I don't know if this is the right place to say this but i will all the same. I am in no way pointing fingers at anyone but I am speaking on behalf of my club and team members when I say this. In last week's match reports that appeared on newspapers, half of the match report that appeared on one of them that concerned my team's game against White Hart was an apology for a mistake that happened in the match report the previous week and had nothing to do with the game in question. I know that my team has not been playing the most avant-guard Hockey but for this newspaper to prefer to mention an apology instead of some match facts especially when a member of my club wrote notes about the whole match seems unfair.
