English men's hockey is reeling from the loss of three of its best umpires who have quit because they are getting no international appointments.

Steve Brooks, Mark Pettit and Neil Smith have all decided to leave the domestic game after being ignored by the International Hockey Federation.

Brooks feels especially hard done by after being criticised for his handling of the Holland versus India game during the Champions' Trophy last year.

The umpires' manager in Holland told him he lacked man-management skills - which have always been his strength.

Brooks, who retired last Monday, said yesterday that English umpires were victims of their own success because so many had reached a good standard that international appointments had to be shared around.

Pettit and Smith have had some international opportunities, but because they did not make an instant impression and came home upgraded, those next on the list were given the next chance.

There are no English umpires on the list for Athens.

The Higgins Group National Indoor League continues this weekend, with Loughborough Students and Chelmsford heading the men's and women's Premier Divisions. The top four sides qualify for finals' night, later this month.

Brooks
What an absolute joke - Brooks lacking man management skills he could teach most other umpires a thing or two!!

Its a crying shame Brooksie after all the work you have put in to get where you did.

Brooksie
Not to acccept that umpires get it it wrong.....is an English affliction. The F.I.H were wrong to judge a great umpire on one game ....however our umpires need to learn to accept criticism in heated games, and not over-react. The Indians rightly or wrongly protested at having lost the game, with a 2 goal advantage with minutes to play. The captain was shown the yellow .......justified or not, Brooks got it wrong. The F.I.H manager was right, and its best our umpires learn from this. Its not often in the domestic game that one can critisize umpires. Is this the second olympics we miss out on an umpire appointment? There is a message there for the umpires organisation to take on board...

English - Scottish - Welsh Umpires !
I have been know to disagree with umpires .....and umpire training ....and the whole principle/concept/way of thinking of umpires ! However........ Brooksie is an excellent umpire...and i have told him as much !

I have watched the best umpires in the world at international tournaments and i have discussed the umpiring during games with international coaches !

Umpireing managers......or Ex umpires (to old to umpire) i have had many a lively debate with !

Booksie is an excellent umpire and the game is worse for having lost him ! But he should not come back unless he is happy to come back into the 'rubbish' system who treated him badly !

Dont ask Brooksie to come back....change the systems and he will want to come back !

Many good English Umpires
Everyone seems to be focussing on the one miss Brooks made during the CT in Holland last summer.
But let's be realistic: the fact that Brooks didn't get too many appointments on top level is also - and I think: largely - caused by the fact that the UK has a so large number of top umpires. Steve Graham, Keith Roper, Hamish Jamson, David Leiper (he is from your island too, and he is going to Athens!) are four top umpires all on the two top lists of the FIH.
Maybe it has been also a little bit the case that too many UK umpires outranked Brooks. It is the same in Holland: number five gets fewer and less important games than number one, two and three.

CT
I was at the game Brooksie was told he didn't have man management skills. Firstly the two decsions that were called in to questions he got right. Video evidence supports this. After both decisions he was crowded by the Indian team and management who tried to pressure him into changing his decision. This was poor sportsmanship verging on cheating. What does an umpire do? Brooksie was exactly right and the Indians din't even have the decency to apologise after it was proved that they were in the wrong. Its not Brooksie that should leave the International scene ... perhaps the Indians should face some sanctions.

Bad for the Game
It is a very sad situation for three good umpires to hang up their whistles in such a short space of time. These guys have a wealth of experience behind them and I think that the National League will be all the poorer for their absence.

With regards Peter's comment "Maybe it has been also a little bit the case that too many UK umpires outranked Brooks...... number five gets fewer ......." With all respect to the other gentlemen mentioned, Steve Brooks is in no way outranked by them, he is every bit as good if not better than them.

Umpires !
It is sad that some umpires have choosen retirement and unable to accept positive critism ,perhaps, thinking they are far better than the rest .
Frankly, it will be in the interest of hockey if the circle of international umpires was to include umpires from all hockey playing nations and just not a few !

So what!
More will replace them, natural wastage! players who fail to get international honours keep going, some for too long. The game is for enjoyment if they don't enjoy it then we are better off without them.

And Neil Smith was ginger!

How short sighted surely it is better we retain relatively young, talented umpires. I am sure questions would be asked if Barry Middleton just gave up due to this kind of thing.

I for one would rather we enabled the umpires to enjoy their hockey and continued performing at the top level for years to come and then put that experience to good use by coaching those that will replace them.

But there again your response does not sound like it came from a person who cares much about the state of our hockey or the sport in general.

Brookesy
Having played national league for 10 years and been umpired by all of the umpires mentioned (Steve Graham, Keith Roper, Hamish Jamson, David Leiper and brookesy). To say that Brookesy has no man management skills is a joke, ask any of the players in the national league who is the most respected umpire and I guarantee that the majority will side with Brookesy. One of his greatest skills is talking to players during the game, without stopping the flow of the game and without dishing out meaningless green cards.
If Steve Graham was half as good as he thought he was he would be umpiring the olympic final !

What is happening here????
I am confused here. Can't umpires make mistakes and learn from them? Why are they being judged so harshly when their mistakes are mininum? Why is unneccessary pressure being put on umpires by FIH and Umpires Managers? What is happening to the game? What is happening to those who are given the responsibility to improve the umpiring and they put unneccessary pressure on umpires? I no longer enjoy doing what I know what I am good at. Once the players are happy with my management skills, that is what is important. Who cares about what "those" say. Sorry you have to leave the game guys!

int ump
is umpiring all about recieving international appointments?
tell that to the hundreds of teams and umpires who participate domestically in the uk every year. we have levels for everything and in my personal opinion it is insulting for other teams that these umps give up because they don't get international appointments.
it shows that they have little respect for the game and only concern for their own personal development (should they not go hand in hand?)
I agree that they are excellent umps, why not help though and pass their experience on, they've had alot from english hockey, why not be adult enough to accept lack of appointments (from ehf and fih, not english hockey) and give something back by still umpiring?

Why am I not surprise that Brooksie fell through the cracks. Success comes through hard work not by favouritism. He should have never done the Commonwealth Games final ahead of Clive McMurray from South Africa. But i guess when one fraternise with the Umpires manager, you will go places. But for how long.
