The 31st Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Asia Tournament was held, last week in Thailand. Over 30 teams from around the world took part in men's and women's events, with a focus on fun in the sun being the key. Unlike other events such as a World Cup or Champions Trophy, the hockey stick vendors are replaced with beer tents and T-shirt sales. Each night great parties are held outdoors, with live bands and this allowed true international friendships to start, through hockey.

The event is still played on 3 beautifully prepared natural grass pitches, despite Bangkok having 3 world class artificial pitches. Teams this year came from India, Malaysia, England, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Switzerland. The winner for the first time was Thailand's only full time professional team, the Royal Bangkok Air force, who defeated Hong Kong's Shaheen in the Final. Some suggestions were made that this classy Thai team, should seek to play in a League overseas, such as the SCPL.

One thing is for sure, that this great hockey event will expand and grow for another 31 years as they hope to have more teams from Europe and Australia / New Zealand.

fantastic
Sawadee Khrap,

It was one helluva event for a hockey event held in Thailand. So-called top organisers can take a cue from this event and should incorporate the "feel good atomsphere" in all future events.

Malaysia, and the Asian Hockey Federation could start by looking at themselves. Dare i think the Azlan Shah tournament in Kuala Lumpur next month would generate such an atmosphere?

The Thai air force team will give some teams in the malaysia hockey league a run for their money. Maybe the MHF should invite them After all the team and jet in and out in no time!

Well done Thailand.

Superb
A great event, and a big thank you to the Royal Bangkok Sports Club for hosting it. Only suggestion would be to try and include more teams in the knock out stages after the group stage

RE: fantastic
How can you even begin to compare the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament with this one?
Are they world class national teams competing in this tournament?
In fact are there ANY national teams competing in this tournament?

yes, i agree the MHF and AHF can learn from this event. But I would not suggest that we send MHF secretary S Satgunam, who is also paid executive secretary (RM60,000 a year) of the AHF to Bangkok on a study tour because he may end up indulging in the niceties available in the capital city.

the ahf should include people from this orgainsing committee for some of the major AHF events.

I think you miss the point.
Its about enjoying hockey, sports and freinds.. That's the atmosphere, and not about "what National teams were there". Its also about participation being the most important thing, and with Sikhs, Muslims, Buddists, Taoists, Christians and HK British / German alcoholics, all having fun together....what better atmosphere could there be?

Is there a web-site? I can't think of anything better than drinking beers in the Thai sun, and a bit of average standard grass hockey, with a weekend in Bangkok going hard...
....We are SOLD, sign us up next year.......but how????

Mr George (or is it George Koshy),

I did not compare the Thai event with the SultanAzlan Shah tournament. They are poles apart in terms of competition.

what i meant that when we have world class teams at events such the Azlan Shah tournament, it would help if a fun atmosphere was created the duration of the tournament.

so, dont be too quick to shoot from your hip because we all know that you are keen to make your views known to get into the good books of the MHF management.

George Koshy has said that he wants to be the secretary of MHF and executive sec of AHF.

But I am really surprised that a hockey official receives RM 60,000 (RM3.80= USD 1)a year for adminstrative duties.Does anyone know how much he receives as secretary of the MHF?

A scandal, to say the least.

George is such a fool that I think he has forgotten how to enjoy a hockey tournament.

I love to drink Singha Beer and bask in the fun and joy of Thailand. I will bring my club down from Sydney is we are told how to contact the organisers for next year's event.

George wont be there guys, so we will have a whole lotta fun!!!

Well done, Thailand. I hope an invitation would also be extended to hockey writers to particpiate in the event.

I can plan early for the trip next year. Can Simon Bach give us more information on this event and also tell us how you enjoyed.

Is it true the MHF secretary earns that much from the AHF alone? What about the MHF and what other perks does he receive? Maybe , I should seek my fortunes in Malaysia.

What can I say...being a Kiwi playing in Hong Kong is one thing but touring to this place with the club was the BEST experience! You lot from NZ and Aussie would love it. The 18 minute games, the beers, the massage (at the ground!) all made this a memorable tournament for all the right reasons! See you next year!
