The Pan American Hockey Federation has announced that the 2nd Indoor Pan American Cup will be hosted by the Federacion Venezolana de Hockey and held in Valencia, Venezuela, March 25 - 28, 2004.

National Associations have been invited to enter their men's and women's teams in this event and to respond to the PAHF invitation no later than December 12.

Valencia is 135 kilometers from Caracas and it is expected that teams will be housed in athlete residences.

The 2nd Indoor Pan American Cup is not the Americas Qualifier for the 2nd FIH Indoor World Cup; that event will be held in 2005.

For more information, please visit the Pan American Hockey Federation web site @ http://www.panamhockey.org/

The Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) is recognized by the FIH as the governing continental federation for all field hockey in the Pan American region. There are 21 member Nations of the PAHF. For more information please contact info@panamhockey.org.

PAHF - November 20
The dates of the 2nd Indoor Pan American Cup have been changed to March 18 - 21, to avoid a clash with the National Referendum that is taking place in Venezuela over the last week-end of March.

What a amateur!!! "Valencia is 135 kilometers from Caracas and it is expected that teams will be housed in athlete residences."

That's why hockey in Americas is behind the other continents... No organization, no professionalism...

Team USA
I wonder if anyone on the womens high performance committee is considering wasting our money sending the u23's this year. Or maybe send the outdoor resident players who are not on the travel squad. Indoor is an area where we have some great womens teams who specialize in this. Why not let the minutewomen or team za or another womens team go and represent team USA. The USFHA could even help subsidise the trip. They would surely do a much better job than the previous US indoor team did.

Take it seriously
I think the Pan-American field hockey federation should take this championship more seriously.
It was a real good initiative by them and the FIH to make the first Indoor Pan-am in Whashington. Indoor hockey is a realy atractive modality to play and watch. They must have good reasons to make the qualifier only in 2005 and not at the Pan-Am, as it was in Washington. The problem is that this takes some of the importance and interest away from the championship.
I realy would like to know why they changed that.

About the way it's going to be in Venezuela, i don't see much problem. I would like to stay in a hotel together with the team, because it's good for the group, but staying in players house, also have some advantages. You get to know diferent people and the country from a diferent perspective, make knew friends and also save some money.
About the city. If they have the necessary infro-struture for the tournament, there's no problem. Not everything has to be in the capital.

canadian teams
will canada support the mens' and womens' team, or will they be forced to pay out of their own pocket...again. wait, a womens' team wasn't even put together because the coach didn't support indoor hockey. i do hope to see both the men and women at this tourney...possibility of a double gold?

Was Venezuela the only country to show interest in host this competition? I heard that other countries were interested too, and maybe with better conditions than Venezuela.

As I said before, field hockey in Americas is too amateur, different is other continents. How can you offer to national teams to stay at "athlete residences"? Is this or not a official PAHF tournament?

If the National Associations and the PAHF do not get more professional, we will always have only one country, or maybe two, participating in the World Cup, Olympic Games, etc. and in the other international competitions.

US Women
The USFHA has gotten a commitee together to set up tryouts and selections for a team. There will be little or no funding at this time. They have reached out to some of the traditional club powers; enigma (za), minutewomen, etc. as well as the premier league to fill out a team. If they can get together some of the better players and those players can afford to go, they should do well, at least much better than the U23's did.

Venezuela politics
Are these teams even still going to Ven. with all that is happening there politically? With the referendum so close to the tourn. date, you would think a bit more pause would be given before sending down US hockey players ablaze with red, white and blue and flags. It will be chaos there, and the state department has already warned travelers/US citizens of kidnappings and other problems. This needs to be assessed before USFHA sends a team down there, esp. to stay in local players' houses!

Actually, on second thought, if there is a risk of danger, can I suggest that the whole USFHA staff goes down there, including the president? While tragic, it may solve some future problems... GO USA

The US Men's and Women's team are looking forward to coming down to Venezuela. We have all bought tickets this week and anticipate a good tournament. See you there.

To those who have implied that the Venezuelan organization is not good, they have lined up an excellent choice of accomodation at a variety of rates, including accomodation at an athletic training center for the state in which Valencia is located. This is what was referred to and some interpreted to be athletes' homes.

Rene Granat has been very responsive to requests for information and is providing major help with transportation.
