Masroor Ahmed Masroor is preparing to launch a new Hockey Magazine, the Monthly Times of Hockey, from Karachi, Pakistan. He has big plans for his new publication, and for the game of hockey. planetfieldhockey's Andrew Griffiths talked to him briefly about his plans


AG: Why have you decided to start a hockey magazine in Pakistan?
MAM: I have decided to start publishing a magazine on hockey in Pakistan, because Hockey is the national game of our country and in this game Pakistan's achievements are unforgettable. There was a time when all the titles of hockey were with Pakistan. We have a brilliant past in our national game of hockey. We have produced a number of world-class players. This is why I decided to start a magazine on hockey.

AG: What is your background in hockey?
MAM: I played hockey in my college days, but I am player of the pen from very beginning. Journalism has been my main interest from the start. I had started writing on hockey from 1980 and my special interest is interviews. I have interviewed a number of hockey players of different countries.

AG: What language will the magazine be published in?
MAM: We are publishing this magazine in Urdu, which is our national language, but in addition to this we will give due share to English and our magazine, and also publish a few pages in English. No separate version in English is being published. We will publish stories from planetfieldhockey as well.

AG: What will the magazine focus on? Do you have a particular goal?
MAM: The main aim of publishing the magazine is to give more and more coverage to our national game hockey.

AG: Do you think there is a big enough market for the magazine?
MAM: Yes there is enough of a market for this magazine because this is the only magazine on hockey, not only in Pakistan but also throughout Asia.

AG: How is hockey in Pakistan at the moment? Do you think your magazine can help to build the hockey community?
MAM: At the moment hockey is in the worst condition in Pakistan. We have earned great laurels in hockey, but now we are the loser all the time. This is due to the politics involved in games nowadays. However, army men have taken over the entire set-up of hockey a few months back and it seems that our hockey will again be on the right track very soon. Our magazine will surely play its due role for the betterment of our national game, through writing articles, having concrete criticism and in so many other ways. Hockey is going backwards, and so it the time to give the game our personal attention. All of us related to hockey in any way should try to popularise the game.
